J's Chimes: Welcome Aboard The AFA Bus...

Seems like preps for the coming Anime Festival Asia 2011 is well under way and ads have started appearing in all shapes and sizes... Yep, even to our transportation vehicles. Seems like they Ita buses to advert this event. Hopefully this is gonna be good too because this is also the very first AFA event in which I've bought tickets to watch the concert. A pretty hefty price I must say but it well worth it with all the famous idols coming to Singapore for the concert.

AFA will be held in Singapore on the 11 November 2011, an auspicious day indeed for many people around the world to get married too... Well that's what they believe... In any case, 111111 also marks the launch of a much awaited game by Illusion soft too which may excite lots of fans around the world too... Not gonna spoil it so soon so wait for more updates later on...

J's Chimes: AFA Is Back!

The Anime Festival Asia is back once again and am so looking forward to it. Reason being that I've also bought the tickets for the concert. Though it cost a bomb, I guess it's worth it once in a while since this event only happens once a year. AFA 2011 will commence from 11 Nov to 13 Nov 2011 and am hoping it be the best out of the other 3 years previously. And of course, that includes purchasing of more models and anime in that coming event...

Am also looking forward to Hatsune Miku's concert which will happen on the 11 Nov 2011. Heard it be the same as the 3D projection performance that took place back in Sapporo Japan recently too. Still, there's about a month away from all the excitement so trying to contain myself for the time being and update more of AFA when it's closer. For more information about AFA, you can view their website at http://www.animefestival.asia/

J's Chimes: SOYC Cosplay 2011

Finally managed to skim through the photographs and uploaded it for viewing... Anyway the Start Of Year C ended yesterday and I must say it's a lot better than last year given the fact that it's much bigger and such. Having said that, here are the photographs taken at the event. However do be warned that some of the photographs are of extremely low quality as photobucket resizes the photos even more somehow... Anyway you can view the photos by clicking here or from the tab bar on the right.

J's Chimes: S.O.Y.C. Cosplay Event

The 'Start Of Year' cosplay event continues again this coming Saturday at the Ngee Ann Poly Convention Center. Due to certain reason this event has been pushed back to April this year but it seems like this event has become larger than ever with more bigger sponsors to boot. Am pondering still whether to go or not... Regardless, the entry price would be $3 for pre-orders and $5 for door entries. Find out more in their website here.

J's Chimes: April Fools...

Alodia Gosiengfiao, a famous cosplayer in Philippines had us all fooled when she said that she's gonna quit cosplaying soon because of studies... And I so thought that she's really gonna quit and such but it turns out to be an April Fools Day joke... darn, can't believe am pwned by someone I don't know as a friend instead of my other friends...

What she really means going back to school was actually cosplaying in Haruhi's school uniform to promote the Suzumiya Haruhi anime in Animax instead... Well, that's one way to advertise something... In any case, Alodia is back in cosplay thank goodness...

J's Chimes: Singapore Comifest

The other event that is also held on the 5 - 6 March this coming weekend will be the Singapore Comifest at the Suntec City Convention Center. Features plenty of cosplays and probably a couple of booths here and there selling some anime stuffs. The question lies is that which will be more worthwhile to go during the weekends. Certainly the JPLEX seems kinda promising but unless you've got a ticket to watch the concert, then it would be good. Perhaps the Comifest is worth to explore for a while since it's free and is located in a business district... In any case, click here to find out more about this event.

J's Chimes:Model And Scale Model

It's quite rare to see models posing with scale models of the very same kind. And even more rare to see a model cosplaying the exact same costume as Suzumiya Haruhi and her black bunny suit. Even better is that she looks about the same as her toy counterparts...

Whoever says 3D is bad should reconsider this... seriously... Perhaps this would change much of your thoughts...

Unfortunately the popularity of Suzumiya Haruhi has been dwindling ever since the new season's animes are up. Probably much of the fans now look up to Kirino Kousaka and other animes airing now... Maybe if you're fortunate enough, someone may just cosplay as this in some conventions happening around the world...

J's Chimes: My Little Sister Can't Be This Porno...

With the popularity of Ore No Imouto sweeping across Japan, the anime is easily being at the watchful eyes of the porno industry and sooner than you expected, something of a parody version came out in the market... This is one of the crazy examples of anime taken to extremities in which am not in favor of. Popular animes like Evangelion to K-On! had already been targeted and it's nothing new to this industry.

Perhaps the most unacceptable thing about these DVDs is that the actors and actresses taking on the role of Kirino, her brother and Kuroneko aren't really impressive, causing criticism and a stir in forums. Likewise, how can this ugly guy be Kirino's brother?! And Kuroneko being so well endowed?

And here's a short clip for you to ponder about why this guy can be the main character of this 'Soap Opera'... A little comparison between the anime version from the bottom left and the main show provided for all your criticism needs...

J's Chimes: EOY 2010

Amidst the Singapore Toys, Games and Manga Convention, the End of Year cosplay (EOY 2010) is held today from 10am to 6.30pm at the Republic Polytechnic Singapore. Tickets for door entry is $16 while VIPs are $29. It is truly saddening that it has clash with another major event. I truly believe many cosplayers will migrate to this event instead of STGCC so if you are truly interested, you might wanna visit the EOY 2010 now! For more details please visit the site here.

J's Chimes: Have You Bought Your Tickets Yet?

The Singapore Toys, Games And Comics Convention is drawing near and will start on the 10 - 12 Dec 2010. You can get those tickets online at Gatecrash or call their hotline number to order one. Also, you can actually purchase them at AXS or SAM machines located around Singapore. Had mine purchased yesterday and it cost a whooping $25 for 3 days entry. Well, this event only happens yearly so I guess we do not really have a choice... Buy now to avoid disappointment and lining up over at the convention area just to get the tickets for entry...

J's Chimes: To Be Good At Cosplaying

Cosplays are slowly getting the hypes in Singapore and so does the demand for higher quality and details for the costumes. Well of course we can't compare cosplays with Japan because there are may professional cosplayers around that treat these very seriously. And thus these are the 10 factors to consider and ensure your cosplay is a success and worth of praise to audiences around.

1.) Your Passion For Cosplay
- Your interest in Cosplaying is perhaps the most important factors to note of. Without passion, all these will not be as truly enjoyable as you're doing it for the sake of it.

2.) Display Your Creativity And Skills
- Costumes aren't easy to make than you think it is. Especially when it comes to the details and such which make it time consuming to complete. Not only that, you'd need lots of creativity to make certain elements of the costume which aren't sold anywhere in the market.

3.) Know Where To Get The Right Materials
- It is important to know what material suits best for your costume so that it would turn out exactly as you want it to be. Different materials have different textures, feel, design, etc to it and thus it may affect your overall look of your entire costume if it fails to meet the standards.

4.) Know Which Character Suits You
- In layman terms, cosplay a character who has about the same built as you. For example, it would be weird to cosplay a well-built character when you are thin and so forth. The audiences prefer closer resemblance of your cosplay to the character rather than someone who forces himself to cosplay someone they can't.

5.) Learn The Basics Of Makeup
- Makeup plays an important role in any cosplays and could even change your looks to that desired. It does also gives you the confidence you need and cover up spots in which you do not want people to pry on.

6.) Allow Yourself Ample Time
- Give yourself ample amount of time to work on your costumes and not rush, only to realize that you didn't want it to be this way. Plan and schedule your time; from searching your materials, designing and making the costumes and to trial and errors needed. Only then will you be able to display yourself with confidence of your work without scrutiny.

7.) Acquire Feedback And Consult Your Friends

- Have your friends look at your cosplay and be the judge. If they like it, there wouldn't be much of a problem in events would it? At least your friends could give you some tips, ideas and valuable feedback about it so that you could improve.

8.) Gather Information To Spark Ideas
- Sometimes you'd run into road blocks and thus it is wise to gather some information thru websites and other materials to get new ideas for your work. Take a scroll in the arcade, maybe you'd find some interesting materials which could proved to be useful for your costumes.

9.) Motivate Yourself
- Low on morale or no motivation to do it? One way is to immerse yourself with much of cosplay events and stuff related to it. Only then will make you burn with enthusiasm to want to make a costume. Buy your materials, plan or sketch your costume, prepare something and place them in front of your work desk to make you feel motivated to do it.

10.) Enjoy And Express Yourself
- Enjoy your planning, making stages of your costumes. Enjoy them even more when displaying your finished product in cosplay events. Your hard work is finally paying off and believe that you've done a good job.

J's Chimes: Arm Guard Completed...

Yup... Had finally completed my arm guard but still thinking whether or not to wear it to AFA X as it may hinder my photography... In any case, this took me about a week or so just to complete... Here's a little sketch of the sections of it...

Had to literally drew the parts out on paper for a trial first before proceeding to using the foam sheets and the Synthetic leather for the armor... Quite the tedius work there as have to manually drew and measure by hand...

The foam sheets are later cut and glued together. Once the shapes are out, the synthetic PVC leather is then glued onto it. This makes it elastic and flexible. Adhesives were used as its stronger.

Ran out of black foam sheets and replaced it with another color instead. This is a photo of the shoulder armor in its preparatory stages... Seriously I didn't even think that it might turn out so well though...

The armor for the wrist, elbow and till the shoulder. didn't make the armor for my fingers as I would not be able to hold my camera if I did... (And that would be disastrous as I would definitely be taking photos of the convention...)

the Armor for the shoulder and misc. Still pondering whether to wear it to AFA X or not... In any case, it is quite an amazing feat to be able to create it from scratch... Didn't expect it to turn out well despite man setbacks. But now comes the most challenging part... Should I wear to Suntec City? (Doubt would have the time to put it on when queuing up for the opening...

J's Chimes: Teenage Big Day Out Cosplay

The photos for the cosplay event held by the Teenage magazine is up. Didn't take much photos though as the event is kinda disappointing as the convention space is a bit small. However it held up well with the performances on stage. Well regardless, you can view it by clicking here or simply from the right bar menu. But no matter as the AFA X is coming very soon... Time to stock up and prepare for the coming battle...

J's Chimes: Dark Vader And Smart Phones

What does Dark Vader and a smart phone have in common? Ermm... They are both black in colour and looks cool... highly advance... Hmm, sometimes I wonder what they both really have in common...In any case, this phone by Docomo looks so much like the Iphone or Samsung Galaxy... Somehow the name Galaxy S is being used too... Well anyway, this advert is really cool somehow...

J's Chimes: Making A Hand Guard Cosplay...

Now that my examinations are over, it time to concentrate on making a hand guard cosplay and hopefully just in time for the coming AFA X. Had finally found all materials and prep them beforehand before starting. Have always wanna try making a costume, prop or some sort so that it's originally mine... But of course, I'd still need a sample for making one.

A typical example would be this sample in which I took from the Mecha Art Museum that was held months back at the West Coast Plaza. Gonna try my best to make one and hopefully it turns out well though... Will be keeping you guys posted about the progress and completion if I will to make it though... (You seriously got to have the mood and the time and patience to make one of these...)

J's Chimes: Teenage Big Day Out!

What better ways to prepare for the coming AFA X than visiting the coming event that will be held this week from the 5th to 7th November at Suntec City Convention. Teenage Big Day Out is an event organized by the Teenage Magazine Singapore which includes cosplay as a theme for this event... (Though am not a teenager already, it is still good to visit one of these events for photo takings.) So if you are somewhere within that area, you might wanna drop by and take a look as admission is free.

J's Chimes: A Successful Presentation...

It was nerve-wrecking when the lecturer finally announced the results of our presentation and gave feedback for it. And when it was finally our turn, surprisingly our presentation was the second best in Day 1 of the 3 day presentation period. After all the hard work that we had put in, our efforts are finally paid off. Everyone in our group had really done a seriously great job in the role-playing of our presentation. It is somewhat unfortunate that we did not record it though... In any case, here's the complete introduction video of our topic titled 'An Introduction To Otaku Culture' which was break down to 4 main sections mainly manga, anime, cosplay and video games... A really big thank you to those who had made it all possible
